Known as a BBC Music Magazine Rising Star, British pianist Maria Marchant performs frequently as recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician.
She has performed in numerous festivals and music societies and at leading venues in the UK and elsewhere and often gives world premieres of new piano compositions. Many of her live performances are broadcast on Radio 3, most recently on ‘In Tune’ and she is currently pianist-in-residence at the Shipley Arts Festival.
Playing in the All Souls Orchestra, Maria tells us:
“When I became a member of All Souls Church 5 years ago and looked into ways to serve in my church family, the music scene was really appealing, especially after I first heard the All Souls Orchestra play for an evening service – wow! The energy, musicianship and commitment to Jesus all come across to listeners in an immediate, powerful and yet self-effacing way and to play as part of the ASO is a great blessing to me.
One of the moments I enjoy most about being part of ASO is actually before the music: praying together in the time just before the concert or service starts. As a solo pianist, you become used to praying alone in your dressing room before concerts here, there and everywhere so to suddenly feel a whole church family of musicians around you praying to God is truly amazing and then the music becomes a continuation of prayer and worship. For me, being in All Souls, leaning on the wonderful Steinway to pray is where I feel most at home. Performing some of Noël Tredinnick’s arrangements and compositions is a privilege and honour – it’s completely inspiring how Noël manages to lead and shape the music while bringing out the best in all of us – what a gift. I can still remember his breath-taking closing prayer at an event All Souls graciously hosted celebrating God’s creativity through my debut CD launch, ‘Echoes of Land & Sea’:
On a rather different note, one of the most fun moments I’ve had at All Souls was playing the Bake Off music for the Real Lives event when Mary Berry visited All Souls, my favourite celebrity chef!
Next up are a couple of performances of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12 in A major K414, lots of chamber music concerts in the Shipley Arts Festival and a recital of Granville Bantock’s piano music to launch my latest CD which features ‘Saul’, a solo piano work based on events in 1 Samuel. “I’m also part of the tour group with the All Souls Orchestra in France this summer, bringing the gospel through music to new audiences.”
Maria is definitely a pianist to watch out for! Follow the All Souls Music trip to France with Maria on piano through Facebook updates until mid July.
“..delivered by Marchant with a richness of musicianship that haunts the memory…”
