At All Souls Church, each year we have a meditation service on Good Friday, allowing us time to reflect on the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross.
This 3 hour service is split into 6 sections. Each section includes a hymn, an anthem, and a short sermon. Please come and join us on Friday 30th March 12pm-3pm and feel free to stay as long as you like.
Good Friday Service with the All Souls Choir
This year the All Souls Choir will sing the following anthems conducted and chosen by our Choir Director, Ollie Nicolson. Ollie has been working as part of the team at All Souls Music for many years and also writes his own music which will feature as part of the service. For links to his music click here.
He explains his choices below.
Purify my heart – B. Doerksen arr. N. Swinford
This is a traditional choral take on this well known worship song, which asks God to make us holy.
Wash me throughly – S. S. Wesley
A moving anthem acknowledging our sin and asking for God’s cleansing and forgiveness.
What love is this – O. Nicolson
This song, composed specially for this service, tells the Gospel story of Jesus from incarnation to death to resurrection to glory.
Surely he hath borne our griefs – from Messiah by G. F Handel
With words straight from Isaiah, this searing chorus conveys something of the scandal of the substitutionary atonement that took place on the cross.
God so loved the world – C. Nygard
The Easter story is a message of hope for everyone, so I try to include John 3:16 each year. This is a lovely, fresh setting that reaches a powerful climax.
So high the price – D.C. Bailey/M. Funderburk
This contemporary American anthem starts with an extract from a Bach passion chorale and then reflects on what it cost God to suffer and die for mankind.
