‘Awake, awake, Zion, clothe yourself with strength, Put on your garments of splendour, Jerusalem, the holy city.’ (Isaiah 52:1a)
Awake, Awake O Zion is a song that is based on the 52nd chapter of Isaiah, and therefore draws on the old testament metaphors which point to the gospel. The words are a call to the church today to lift up our eyes and behold God because of his saving work in Jesus. We do so as the Israelites did in the time of the prophets when God mercifully delivered them from their enemies. we have a far greater salvation to sing about because Jesus has redeemed us from the greatest enemy: Sin, by his blood. We therefore have great reason to praise the God who reigns and is seated on His throne!
Written by Nathan Fellingham and subsequently orchestrated by John Langley.
